With the cost of living on the rise, many Britons are looking for ways to tackle household tasks like cleaning without breaking the bank. Cleaning products, especially those for specific surfaces and areas, can be costly and can start to add up if they are bought regularly. Not only are branded cleaning products more expensive, but some also contain chemicals that can cause damage to certain surfaces, smell pungent and can be harmful to children and pets.

With this in mind, Andrew Bramley, a professional in the Commercial Cleaning Industry, at Pure Freedom has shared his affordable and sustainable tips for cleaning an entire house for less than £1.

The cleaning expert recommended using natural products that can already be found in the home such as white vinegar and bicarbonate of soda which is also known as baking soda.

He said: “When cleaning with natural ingredients it’s best to have a few in your cupboard to start off with.

"For example, I recommend vinegar, baking soda and then any empty spray bottles you have lying around. Reuse them by cleaning them out and labelling them with your new mixture."

Here are Andrew's steps for creating your own cleaning solutions to clean the entire home:

To make your own toilet cleaner, simply pour a cup of white distilled vinegar into the toilet bowl, followed by approximately half a cup of baking soda.

This will create a reaction, while the solution is fizzing start scrubbing the toilet and let it sit for "15 minutes" before flushing.

To make this mixture, add one part water to one part white distilled vinegar and add in your favourite essential oil to give the spray a fresh scent.

Add one part vinegar to eight parts water and add it to a repurposed spray bottle.

Mix six tablespoons of baking soda with a full cup of water and microwave it until it boils.

Then, leave the solution inside the microwave until the mixture cools down, the steam it has created will loosen any grime.

Ovens are notoriously difficult to clean and is known as Britons' most hated cleaning task.

To make the task easier, Andrew suggested mixing baking soda with vinegar into the oven. The reaction from the two substances will break down any grease or grime in the oven.

Then, simply wipe away the residue. If there are any particular spots with a build-up, scrub in extra baking soda with an old toothbrush.

The "best way" to remove limescale from the shower, sink and bath is to combine two parts bicarbonate of soda with one part white vinegar to make a paste.

Apply the paste to areas where there is a build-up of limescale and leave it for up to 10 minutes.

Andrew added: "Cleaning with these ingredients is not only great for the planet but will save you money week on week by repurposing plastics and ingredients you may already have in your cupboard.”

With sustainable living on the rise in 2023, “eco-friendly cleaning products” have been searched for over 23,500 times.

ASDA Bicarbonate Of Soda costs just 65p and ASDA distilled Malt Vinegar costs just 29p. This amounts to just 94p for both products.
